When they join a new team, people's most common mistake is that they don't spend time learning and observing, assuming to know everything as they were considered stars in their erstwhile teams.
The overconfidence makes them jump to conclusions very fast, and they try to dominate the meetings, start giving out-of-context opinions and ideas. Overconfidence impacts their acceptability among the team members, occasionally making them a laughing stock.
I had the privilege of working with mentors who used to observe the teams for a reasonable period. They were learning, keenly monitoring each aspect of the team dynamics.
They used to spend time in one on one discussions with peers, bosses, and subordinates. And then they used to take charge of the situation by aligning themselves to the new place. They were keen learners.
Being recognized as a star performer in your current team means you are well aligned to the objectives, deliverables, and goals.
But when you join a new team in the same or different organization, it is crucial to learn how the team functions, the key objectives and deliverables, the thought process and reason behind each action, etc., by observing, asking questions, and listening.
